8620 is a low alloy case hardening steel which is supplied to American standards SAE 8620 and AISI 8620. 8620 can be carburised, which will achieve a tough core with a hard wear resistant case. 8620 provides a combination of toughness and wear resistance. 8620 is supplied in either the as rolled or annealed condition for subsequent case hardening.

Mechanical properties are not stated in AISI 8620 or SAE 8620 as standard. The mechanical properties information for AISI 8620 / SAE 8620 is provided below as a guida. A test piece of 19mm diameter AISI 8620 / SAE 8620 is blank carburised for at least one hour at a temperature of between 880-930C and allowed to cool at room temperature. The test piece of AISI 8620 / SAE 8620 is then re treated to 820-840C and quenched in oil.
